Smash Book 101

When I was a teenager I was always collecting bits and pieces of paper, ticket stubs, fortune from fortune cookies, quotes from magazines etc. I taped all these random bits to my mirror and would look at them daily.

I am overwhelmed at the thought of scrapbooking! I want to save all those memories but I can't see myself finding the time or supplies to create all those beautiful pages.

I love creating in my art Journal. I love watching as a page unfolds in front of me, and making it beautiful!

A Smash Book is my perfect solution that will encompass all three of these things in one book. I am on a budget so I decided to start my smash book with stuff I already have around the house. Everything will be what I have on hand, and I hope you will join me for a smash book challenge here on this blog.

I am going to be making video's and picture tutorials to go along with the challenge, so that you can journey along with me and create your own Smash Book full of wonderful memories and fun stuff!

I wasn't sure how long to do the challenge for so I decided to do it by page instead of days. If your anything like me you have a million things going on and creating  is not always possible or even logical on a day to day basis. I decided to make the challenge a 30 page challenge, that way if there is a day that your super busy and can't make the time to work in your Smash Book you won't get discouraged.

This 30 Page Smash Book Challenge will start on October First, and go on until you finish 30 pages at your own pace. This challenge will be open year round, I will keep all the tutorials up on the blog for anyone joining late to follow along with.

I have a Freebie for you! It's a Pdf file of Ideas and Prompts for smash book entries. You don't have to use the ideas but they are there if you get stuck.

Subscribe to my newsletter for updates, freebies, and other fun stuff, that way you won't miss out on any of the challenge details and other blog goodness!

 ...................................................................................................

Welcome to the 30 page smash book challenge! I wanted to upload a video for the first day of the challenge, but for some reason the universe had other plans. LOL. I have looked everywhere for two days, cleaned and organized my craft room looking for my Mini Usb cord, that connects my camera to the computer. I can not find it anywhere! I even went to wal mart hoping they would have one, but all they had was micro usb cords.
I am so sorry guys but the first post will have to be with no video or pictures. I was going to try with my phone camera but everything looks blurry . As soon as I find my cord I will replace this with a proper video intro.

Let's get started

To start out making your smash book you will need a few main supplies.

1. A book. This can be a cheap composition book, a spiral bound notebook, a recycled reading book, a journal, or any kind of book that you want, we will be painting over and gluing paper over the pages, so it's not really important if it's got words or not. a quick note though, the thicker the paper, the better, and longer lasting your smash book will be. I will be using a book I found with thick shiny pages, that was headed for the recycle bin.

2. Paper. This can be white cardstock, scrapbook paper, painted papers, or any other paper you like that will make a good background for gluing on stuff, and journaling. I will be using scrapbook paper, and painted papers.

3. Glue. Any glue will work. we will be gluing on the background papers, as well as photos, tickets, and other little pieces of paper that hold memories for us. Keep in mind, the thinner glues have more water in them and might make your paper look crinkled if not properly aaplied. I will be using Mod Podge, and Aileens Tacky glue.

4. A Brayer, or gift card, oor other plastic card you don't need anymore. This is to help the paper adhere to the surface of your book page, to prevent crinkling, and to get rid of any air bubbles. I will be using a gift card.

5. Acrylic paint. This is not a must have but more a suggestion for adding a little more detail to your page, for covering up things you don't want seen, and such. I will be using cheap acrylic paint to help add details to my pages.

6. A good writing pen, or gel pens. I suggest a Signo uni-ball 307. They have more than one tip, I have Micro, but i think they come a bit thicker tip as well. Gel pens work well too as a final layer, remember gel pens are not permanent, so if you put Mod Podge, or glue over them they will run. The next supply will help with that. I will be using the uni-ball for writing, and gel pens for doodling and decorating.

7. Workable fixative. This comes in a aerosol can, and is a sealant spray that has a matte finish. This will keep your gel pens, from running when you add other elements. I will be using it to seal and protect my finished pages.

8. Mark making supplies. Sponges, paint brushes, stencils, found objects, stamps, etc. I will be using a variety of these to help make the pages fun and interesting.

9. Stickers, washi tape, rub ons, etc. These are not required but more a suggestion. I will be using washi tape to add pockets to some of my pages. I might use stickers as well.

You can use anything you want to make your smash book unique and fun! The next part of the post we will be starting the first page, I will see you soon.
